In a pure democracy, the majority has control over the minority by their vote, and will quickly realize that they can use their vote to enhance their personal fortunes at the cost of others.  The Founding Fathers understood the evils of a pure democracy, which is why they created America as a Constitutional Republic where the individual was to remain soverign and in control of their own life.
